Activities & Events

Welcome to the Dr. George Johnson Middle School Builders Club in Gimli, MB!

For 2006, the Builders Club is running as a Grade 7 & 8 Options Class, where over 90 students are participating in community service projects.  The class is also an opportunity for Club members to learn about civics and issues of interest to the students, including gender discrimination, addictions, health, seniors and social issues in our community and world.

Since early February, students have learned about gender discrimination, body image, attitudes and stereotypes toward boys and girls, and how negative behaviour can affect your self esteem and personal body image.

On February 6th, Arlie Strong of the Interlake Women's Resource Centre spoke on body image, and the class will be developing artwork as a representation of youth ideas around body image and self esteem for the local resource Centre.

Beginning February 13th and carryng through until June, all 3 classes of students will be building relations with local seniors, and developing oral history projects and a film documentary on Gimli's seniors.  In partnership with the Gimli Senior's Resource Centre, this will be an exciting experience and series of field trips!

Finishing off Group 1, students will have the opportunity to hear presentations from the Manitoba Addictions Foundation and local RCMP on the DARE program, to raise awareness of drug and alcohol addictions.  With a 2004 Manitoba Addictions Foundation report indicating alcohol use among Grade 7 and 8 students on the rise in the Interlake, the best prevention is education!

The students will also be assisting the school in a variety of improvements and student projects.

Fundraising

The Dr. George Johnson Builders Club is building partnerships to support a wide range of community organizations, including the Evergreen Basic Needs Food Bank and Respun Threads, Gimli Animal Shelter and a variety of school investment projects, including resources for the renovated school library.

In March the Club bought a slushie machine to make fruit juice slushies.  Every Friday the Builders Club worked with their K-Kids members and Student Council to sell food and drinks over the lunch hour.  The profits were shared and lots of skills learned.  That slushie machine sure is a hit - and a money maker!  The machine paid for the supplies within two canteen lunch spaces!

In April the club hosted a badminton tournament at the school.  Teams paired off with 2 teams prevailing!  The tournament raised over $300!
